China steel exports down 25% yoy in Q1 2017

China steel exports in Q1 2017 were 20.7 mio t, a decline of 25.5% compared to Q1 2016. The revenue from these exports, however, was US$ 13.2 billion, a marked increase of 8.2% over the same period 2016. China exported 108.4 million tons of steel in 2016, after 112.4 million tons in 2015. The top 10 export destinations represent almost 60% of these exports, up from 55% in 2015. China steel exports up nearly 8% year-on-year over record exports 2015

China steel exports in Q1 2016 rose 7.9% year-on-year to 27.83 million tons, while in the same period imports of steel dropped 3.3% to 3.23 million tons.
Apparent domestic consumption in China, however, seems to continue its downtrend and might well drop as much as 10% in 2016. As steel output drops only less than half of that, export pressure does not only persist, it increases.
