Holmium oxide occurs in trace amounts in gadolinite, monazite, and in other rare-earth minerals. It is a component of erbium oxide.

Holmium oxide is used for specialty color glass and cubic zirconia as a yellow and red colorant as well as in eye-safe lasers.
